WSA Jr Referees are those kids who are one year away from being age-eligible for their Grade 8 Referee Certification in January (i.e. those Jr. Referees who registered for last Spring will be taking the online certification test for the state this winter). Essenatially, this gives them 2 full seasons of refereeing prior to them taking the certification class offered on line by the State of CT. To find out more about getting state certified visit the website www.ctreferee.net.
Jr Referees will be trained similarly to their certified counterparts via an online presentation in the Fall, however the Winter trainings (which is when all the new Jr. Referees will be signing up) will have a 3 hour training. The idea behind this process is to mirror the current certification process given by the state.
Jr. Referees officiate only 2nd grade games; therefore the number of games is limited, and only those kids who intend to move forward with becoming a cerfied referee should partake in this free training program.
The good news is these kids will have a firm understanding of the laws allowing them a better chance of passing the State Certification test with ease when the time comes.
All Jr. Referees are on the honor system as far as who is doing this review. The one sure way for us to know if a child has done his work is how he/she functions on the field. A child will be asked to review the Modified LOTG (below) if he/she does not appear to understand the laws of the game. Much like any job; if a Jr. Referee is unable to meet expectations, games will not be assigned. This is how it works once certified as well, so its a good idea for all Jr. Referees to take knowing these laws very seriously
Please note that 2nd grade games are now 6 v 6 in accordance with the new Academy rules (all games for the Academy are 6 v 6 up to U13)
Please review the updated LOTG for WSA Referees (which will reflect this change as well)
